Dog enthusiast and TV presenter Clare Balding CBE visited Newbury Dogs Trust this month.

Whilst doing some research for her new upcoming books, ‘Isle of Dogs’ she met many canines waiting to find their forever home, including five-year-old Terrier Perry.

During the visit on Monday, June 5 the author received a tour by assistant managers Rhian Grey and Natasha Tarrant where they talked about the struggles that Covid has put on dog ownership.

Clare Balding says: “I made some wonderful new canine friends when I visited the Dogs Trust in Newbury to do research for my new book, Isle of Dogs. I was interested to hear about the work Dogs Trust does to help owners who can no longer look after their pet, especially in the event of emergency veterinary care, as well as the support they give to dogs who come into their care from unusual or upsetting circumstances.

“The rehoming centre staff are so patient and do everything they can to comfort and entertain the dogs in their care, with lots of support from volunteers as well. If you can help, please do visit the Dogs Trust website.”

Clare spoke to managers and volunteers about the difficulties that the cost of living has had on dog owners. This has sometimes contributed to some people having to give up their dogs.

Rhian Grey and Natasha Tarrant say: “We were delighted to welcome Clare Balding to the centre – and hear that her mother has previously adopted through Dogs Trust! Clare clearly has significant experience with dogs, throughout her life, and we cannot wait to read her new book.”
